Achieve smooth, consistent interior gypsum surfaces with USG ME joint compounds and finishing products designed for taping, jointing, skimming, texturing and final surface preparation. The range includes ready-mixed, powder and setting-type formulations for different stages of gypsum board finishing, from embedding joint tape to preparing surfaces for paint and decoration.

USG ME offers Sheetrock® All Purpose Joint Compound, Sheetrock® Drying Type All Purpose Joint Compound Powder, Premium Premix, EASYJOINT™ 60 and Tuff Hide™ Primer-Surfacer. These solutions allow contractors and finishing teams to select the appropriate product according to application method, working time and required finish quality.

Drywall Joint Compound Solutions for Smooth Gypsum Board Finishes

A drywall joint compound is used to treat joints between gypsum boards and cover fastener heads, internal angles and finishing accessories before decoration. Depending on the product, it may also be used for skim coating or texturing.

The quality of the finished surface depends on more than the final coat. Joint preparation, paper tape embedment, coat width, drying or setting time and sanding all influence the result.

USG ME provides different compound formulations so installers can match the material to the required stage of the finishing process.

Choose the Right Gypsum Joint Compound for the Application

Different compounds provide different working characteristics. Product selection should therefore reflect the type of work rather than relying on one formulation for every stage.

The selected gypsum joint compound should also be compatible with the gypsum board, joint tape and finishing system specified for the project.

Ready-Mixed Joint Compounds for Taping and Finishing

Ready-mixed compounds reduce on-site preparation and provide consistent material for interior gypsum board finishing.

Sheetrock® All Purpose Joint Compound is an air-drying product suitable for all three coats or as a finishing coat over appropriately prepared plasterboard joints, angles and fastener heads. It can be applied manually or using mechanical tools and sanded after drying to prepare the surface for painting.

USG Middle East Premium Premix is another air-drying option designed for jointing and skimming. It provides low shrinkage, easy sanding and a smooth finished surface while complying with ASTM C475.

These products are useful where contractors want a convenient formulation for multiple stages of drywall finishing.

Setting-Type Joint Compound for Controlled Working Time

Setting-type compounds harden through a chemical setting process rather than depending entirely on air drying. This can make them useful where a predictable working period is important.

EASYJOINT™ 60 is a plaster-based setting compound with a consistent setting time of approximately 60 minutes. It can be used for bedding gypsum board joints, treating angles and covering fastener heads.

The product can be used through the three-coat jointing process or for the first and second coats before applying Sheetrock® All Purpose Joint Compound or Premium Premix as the finishing coat.

Powder Joint Compound for Jointing, Skimming and Texturing

Sheetrock® Drying Type All Purpose Joint Compound Powder combines taping and topping functions within one product for interior drywall applications.

Once mixed with water, it can be used for joint treatment, skimming and simple hand-applied textures. The formulation maintains workable consistency during application and allows successive coats to be feathered outward to create a smooth transition across the gypsum board surface.

Powder products can be practical where site teams prefer to mix material according to project demand while retaining flexibility across several finishing applications.

Level 5 Drywall Finishing for High-Quality Interior Surfaces

Certain interiors require a higher level of surface preparation, particularly where severe lighting conditions or smooth decorative finishes can highlight differences between gypsum board faces and treated joints.

Sheetrock® Brand Tuff Hide™ Primer-Surfacer is designed for Level 5 finishing over new drywall. A spray application combines surface preparation functions to create a more uniform surface before final decoration.

Level 5 requirements should be confirmed during specification so the finishing process, lighting conditions and final paint system can be coordinated before work begins.

Joint Treatment Before Painting and Decoration

A successful finish starts with clean, properly prepared gypsum board surfaces. Paper tape should be embedded with sufficient compound beneath it, followed by subsequent coats that extend progressively beyond the joint.

Each drying-type coat should be allowed to dry adequately before recoating or sanding. Temperature and humidity can influence drying periods, which is particularly important when planning interior work on UAE projects.

Where the project transitions from gypsum board to concrete or cement-based surfaces, a compatible Concrete Plaster or surface-finishing solution should be selected instead of assuming that the same compound is suitable for every substrate.

How to Select a Joint Compound for Your Project

Consider these factors before specifying a finishing product:

  • Application stage: Determine whether the material is for taping, filling, topping or skimming.

  • Compound format: Choose ready-mixed, powder or setting-type formulations according to site requirements.

  • Working time: Consider how much application time installers require.

  • Finish level: Confirm the required surface quality before painting or decorating.

  • Application method: Check suitability for hand or mechanical application.

  • Drying conditions: Account for temperature, humidity and ventilation.

  • System compatibility: Coordinate joint compound, tape, boards and accessories.

  • Technical documentation: Follow the relevant product datasheet and installation instructions.

Complete Gypsum Board Finishing Systems from USG ME

Joint compound is one part of the complete gypsum board assembly. Paper tape, beads, trims, primers and other finishing components should be coordinated to achieve a consistent surface.

Where acoustic performance forms part of the tested wall or ceiling design, an appropriate acoustic Sealant may also be specified at perimeters and other required locations. Joint compound and sealant serve different functions and should be used according to the complete assembly requirements.

QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
ASK A QUESTION

What is drywall joint compound used for?

Joint compound is used to treat gypsum board joints, embed joint tape, cover fastener heads and angles, and prepare surfaces for painting or decoration.

What is the difference between setting-type and drying-type compound?

Setting-type compounds harden through a controlled setting reaction, while drying-type products rely primarily on moisture evaporation. Their working and finishing characteristics therefore differ.

Can one joint compound be used for all three coats?

Yes. Certain USG ME products, including Sheetrock® All Purpose Joint Compound and Premium Premix, are suitable for all three stages of the jointing process when applied according to product instructions.

What is a three-coat drywall jointing system?

It normally includes an initial coat to embed the joint tape followed by progressively wider second and third coats that conceal the joint and create a smooth transition to the board surface.

Which USG ME joint compound has a controlled setting time?

EASYJOINT™ 60 is a setting-type premium jointing powder formulated with a consistent setting time of approximately 60 minutes.

What is Level 5 drywall finishing?

Level 5 is a high-quality gypsum board finish that includes additional surface treatment to create a more uniform appearance before decoration, particularly where lighting or glossy finishes can reveal surface variations.
